New Delhi, Nov 30 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized India’s extraordinary accomplishments during its G20 presidency, citing the revitalization of multilateralism, amplification of the Global South’s voice, advocacy for development, and commitment to women’s empowerment. As Brazil prepares to assume the presidency from December 1, Modi expressed confidence that India’s legacy will resonate for years to come in collective efforts for people, planet, peace, and prosperity.
In an op-ed published in various newspapers on Thursday, Modi underscored India’s inclusive, ambitious, action-oriented, and decisive approach, citing the unanimous adoption of the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration (NDLD) by all G20 members as evidence of their commitment to these principles.
Reflecting on the past year since India assumed the chair, Modi noted the global challenges, including the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, climate threats, financial instability, and declining multilateralism. He called for a moment of reflection and a renewed commitment to the spirit of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” — ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’ as India hands over the presidency to Brazil.
During India’s tenure, Modi highlighted the shift from GDP-centric to human-centric progress, aiming to unite the world rather than highlight divisions. The ‘Voice of the Global South Summit,’ initiated by India, marked a new era for multilateralism, mainstreaming the concerns of developing nations in the global discourse.
India’s domestic approach to the G20 was marked by inclusivity, earning it the title of a “People’s Presidency.” At the midpoint of the 2030 agenda, India presented the G20 2023 Action Plan to Accelerate Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on health, education, gender equality, and environmental sustainability.
Modi emphasized the significance of the Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) in driving progress, including the completion of the Digital Public Infrastructure Repository, a global collaboration featuring over 50 DPIs from 16 countries. The leaders’ declaration showcased India’s commitment to climate justice and equity, urging substantial support from the Global North, acknowledging the monumental resources required.
India’s leading role in UN reforms, especially in restructuring principal organs like the UN Security Council, was highlighted by the prime minister. Gender equality took center stage, culminating in the formation of a dedicated Working Group on the Empowerment of Women.
During its G20 presidency, India led discussions on geopolitical issues and their impact on economic growth and development. Modi stressed a policy of zero tolerance for terrorism and the senseless killing of civilians, advocating for humanitarianism over hostility in an era not defined by war.
