IPL 2024: Shubman Gill Appointed Captain for Gujarat Titans as Hardik Pandya Makes a Comeback with MI

Mumbai, Nov 27: Shubman Gill has been appointed as the captain for Gujarat Titans (GT) in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, following Hardik Pandya’s return to Mumbai Indians (MI). According to a statement from Gujarat Titans, Gill will lead a team known for its exceptional blend of experience and youthful exuberance, which has been the defining characteristic of the franchise. Gill boasts an impressive record, amassing 1373 runs in 33 innings at an average of 47.34, including three centuries and eight fifties. In the last season, he emerged as a standout performer, securing the Orange Cap with 890 runs in 17 matches at an average of 59.33, featuring three centuries and four fifties. The opener played a crucial role in GT’s successful run since its IPL debut, notably scoring 129 runs in 60 balls against Mumbai Indians in the last season, marking the highest individual score by a batter in the IPL playoffs. Expressing his enthusiasm, Gill said, “I am delighted and proud to assume the captaincy of Gujarat Titans and thank the franchise for their trust in me to lead such a fine team. We have had two exceptional seasons, and I keenly look forward to leading the team with our exciting brand of cricket.” After winning the IPL in their debut season in 2022, GT reached the finals in the subsequent season but lost to Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Gill also achieved a remarkable feat by hitting three centuries in the last IPL season, a feat surpassed only by Virat Kohli (2016) and Jos Buttler (2022), who scored four centuries each in a single IPL season. Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya, who played a pivotal role in GT’s debut season in 2022, has returned to his initial franchise, Mumbai Indians, following a trade between the two teams. Hardik played an instrumental role in GT’s triumphant debut season, securing the coveted trophy, and they finished as runners-up in the second season after a thrilling final earlier this year.
