BATHINDA, November 25: Superintendent of Police (SP) Gurvinder Singh Sanga, who was on duty during the security breach of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s convoy in Ferozepur on January 5, 2022, has been suspended.
At the time of the incident, Gurvinder Sanga served as the SP of Ferozepur. Following a thorough investigation, action has now been taken in connection with the security lapse that occurred last year.
As per the Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) report, “Gurvinder Singh Sanga has been suspended for negligence in duty. Gurvinder Singh was the SP Operation in Ferozepur at that time and is currently posted in Bathinda.”
In August, the Supreme Court revealed that a five-member committee appointed by it found the Ferozepur SSP negligent in discharging his duty, despite having sufficient forces available during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Punjab on January 5.
Chief Justice NV Ramana, along with Justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli, stated while reading from the committee’s report that the committee, led by former top court judge Justice Indu Malhotra, recommended the establishment of an oversight committee for the periodic revision of the ‘Blue Book.’
“The Ferozepur SSP failed to discharge his duty to maintain law and order, even though sufficient force was available and he was informed two hours in advance about the Prime Minister’s route,” the court noted.
During the incident in January 2022, the Prime Minister was delayed on a flyover for 15-20 minutes due to road blockades by protesters on his way to Ferozepur, Punjab. The Ministry of Home Affairs classified it as a “major lapse” in his security.
