New Delhi, Nov 24: The government has announced its intention to aid citizens in filing First Information Reports (FIRs) against social media platforms in cases of IT rule violations, particularly concerning objectionable content like deep fakes. Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, revealed that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) will develop a dedicated platform to allow users to report violations of IT rules by social media platforms.
Chandrasekhar assured that Meity will streamline the process for users, making it easy for them to report IT rule violations and seek assistance in filing FIRs. Addressing the media after a meeting with social media platforms, he emphasized a policy of zero tolerance for IT rule violations starting immediately.
The FIR will be registered against the intermediary platform. If the details of the content’s origin are disclosed, the FIR will extend to the entity responsible for posting the content. The minister highlighted that social media platforms have been given a seven-day window to align their terms of use with the IT rules.
