India Calls for Comprehensive Reforms Amidst Credibility Crisis in UNSC

In a renewed effort to secure a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), India has once again emphasized the need for comprehensive reforms within the global organization. India’s permanent ambassador to the UN, Ruchira Kamboj, expressed concerns about the UNSC’s “crisis of credibility,” suggesting that it has become ineffective in achieving peaceful resolutions to global disputes.

Speaking during a UNSC debate on October 20, Ambassador Kamboj underlined the imperative for comprehensive reforms to restore the organization’s integrity. She stated, “The New Orientation for Reformed Multilateralism, which we advocate, flows from the idea that there cannot be genuine solidarity without trust.”

Kamboj’s remarks were delivered during the UNSC Open Debate titled ‘Peace through Dialogue: the Contribution of Regional, Subregional and Bilateral Arrangements to the Prevention and Peaceful Resolution of Disputes.’

Addressing the meeting, Kamboj acknowledged that the UN Charter emphasizes the resolution of disputes through negotiations and diplomacy. She highlighted the significance of recognizing and encouraging bilateral agreements and regional mechanisms for resolving disputes effectively, citing numerous examples where such approaches have yielded mutually acceptable solutions.

Ambassador Kamboj further emphasized that the majority of countries from the Global South support the expansion of both categories of UNSC membership. She stated, “An overwhelming majority of countries from the Global South share our conviction that reforming the UN architecture is no longer a question of ‘why’ but rather ‘when’ and ‘how soon.’ The opportunity presented by the Summit of the Future next year should drive us toward a reformed multilateralism, including the expansion of the Security Council in both categories of its membership.”

Earlier, Kamboj congratulated the Brazilian delegation on their presidency of the UNSC for the month of October. Brazil’s leadership at the UNSC during this period holds significance in shaping the dialogue on global peace and security.
