Srinagar, Sep 30 – PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, on Saturday, called upon the Army to investigate allegations suggesting that certain units in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir were allegedly subjecting local youth to bonded labor, a claim refuted by a defense spokesperson.
Mufti expressed concern after receiving reports from residents of Kanslo Kanda area in Kulgam, who alleged harassment by troops from the 9 RR camp. She further highlighted concerns that young men were being summoned to the army camp and compelled to perform labor without compensation.
In a social media post, Mufti requested GOC Awantipora Balbir Singh to initiate an inquiry into these troubling allegations. She emphasized that if the allegations were found to be true, appropriate action should be taken against those responsible.
However, Lt. Col. Manoj Sahu, PRO Defence, based in Srinagar, dismissed the allegations as “not true.” He stated that the local formation had thoroughly investigated the matter and clarified that casual laborers employed by the army were paid on time, refuting any claims of forced labor.
