Omar Abdullah Applauds Supreme Court Ruling Regarding Ladakh Elections

Srinagar, September 6th: Omar Abdullah, a prominent leader of the National Conference (NC), expressed his satisfaction with the Supreme Court’s decision to grant the “plough” symbol to his party, asserting that the BJP and the Ladakh administration had made every effort to obstruct their rights, but the court recognized their cause.

In a tweet, Abdullah stated, “@JKNC_ has received the verdict we sought and deserved. The Honorable Supreme Court granted us our symbol, the plough, earlier this morning.” He alleged that the BJP, with the support of a biased Ladakh administration, had done everything in its power to thwart them.

“The court saw through this and penalized them by imposing a fine of ₹1 lakh on the administration. Congratulations to @JkncKargil, and a heartfelt thank you to @ShariqJReyaz for his exceptional advocacy before the High Court and Supreme Court,” he added.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court invalidated the August 5th notification from the election department regarding the Ladakh hill council polls, instructing the issuance of a fresh notification within seven days. Justices Vikram Nath and Ahsanuddin Amanullah also dismissed the Ladakh administration’s objection to the allocation of the “plough” symbol to the NC and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on it.

Previously, the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court had rejected the Ladakh administration’s appeal against a single-bench order allowing NC candidates to run in the upcoming elections for the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Kargil, under the party symbol.

The administration had approached a division bench of the high court in response to the single-bench order from August 9th, which directed the NC to approach the Election Department of the Ladakh administration to confirm the reserved symbol “plough” already allotted for the polls.

As per the election department’s notification on August 5th, the LAHDC, Kargil, elections for 26 out of 30 seats are scheduled for September 10th, with vote counting occurring four days later.
