Jammu Janmashtami Market Preparations
Janmashtami, the celebration of Lord Krishna’s birth, is a time of vibrant festivities and devotion in the city of Jammu. As the auspicious day approaches, the markets are abuzz with activity, offering a wide array of idols, decorations, and festive attire to mark this joyous occasion.
Shopkeepers find themselves in the midst of brisk business, as devotees from all walks of life throng the markets in search of everything needed to celebrate Lord Krishna’s birthday with grandeur. Idols of Krishna, available in various shapes and sizes, grace the market stalls alongside an assortment of decorative items.
One shop owner shared, “With an increasing number of people wanting to set up Krishan Jhula (swings) in their homes, clay idols, colorful dresses, and handicraft articles are in high demand. We have a wide variety of designer dresses sourced from Dwarikadeeh Mohallah of Mathura, along with crowns, necklaces, swings, and flutes for devotees, catering to a range of budgets from Rs 100 to Rs 2,500.”
The allure of ornate swings and vibrant, designer clothing for Lord Krishna is undeniable, as Gopal, a local shopkeeper, revealed that these items are flying off the shelves.
In addition to idols and clothing, decorative items such as glittering Mukuts (crowns), Pearl Haars (necklaces), Jhules (swings), Bansuris (flutes), and Morpankhs (peacock feathers) are witnessing high demand. Prime city markets including Pakka Danga, Moti Bazar, City Chowk, and Gandhi Nagar have witnessed large crowds of enthusiastic shoppers purchasing tableau items.
For families, Janmashtami is a time to bond over cherished traditions. Nirmal Kerni, a homemaker, shared, “Every year, we create a tableau depicting different phases of Lord Krishna’s life, including his childhood as Makhan Chor (butter thief). We decorate the Puja room with colorful lights and other decorative items, placing a Jhula there with a small idol of Bal Krishna.”
Janmashtami also sees devotees observing fasts, some for the entire day and others for two days, with the fasts often breaking at midnight to coincide with Lord Krishna’s birth. Sweet shops in the city join in the celebration, offering special treats like Till ke Ladoo and Seeyul ke Ladoo, savored on the eve of Janmashtami.
As the city of Jammu readies itself for this grand celebration, it’s evident that the spirit of devotion and festivity is truly alive during this special time of the year.
