Srinagar’s historic Lal Chowk is undergoing a striking transformation as part of the ambitious Srinagar Smart City Project. The ongoing rejuvenation and modernization efforts within this central area of the city are yielding impressive results, showcasing the potential for urban revitalization through well-planned infrastructure upgrades and innovative design.
Ather Amir, Commissioner of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), provided an update on the progress of the project, highlighting its pivotal components. Among the notable achievements is the successful undergrounding of electricity utilities along Residency Road and in the vicinity of the iconic Ghanta Ghar. This milestone marks a significant step forward as the area becomes wire-free, ensuring enhanced safety and efficiency.
Speaking about this achievement, Ather Amir stated, “The meticulous implementation of underground ducting and the establishment of feeding pillars have enabled live electricity connections through our underground wiring. This innovation not only enhances safety during potential short circuits but also contributes to the visual cleanliness of the area. The successful execution of this initiative amidst technical challenges is truly commendable.”
Beyond the undergrounding of utilities, the project has focused on enhancing essential infrastructure, including drainage systems and pedestrian facilities. A comprehensive sewerage network has been developed to improve drainage, while carefully laid cobbled roads aim to create a safer pedestrian environment without the need for speed breakers.
An exceptional enhancement is the newly established footpath extending up to the Tourist Reception Center (TRC), significantly enhancing walkability in the area. Ather noted, “The creation of this footpath underscores our commitment to providing a seamless pedestrian experience, encouraging exploration and leisure.”
The Lal Chowk plaza itself has undergone a thoughtful redesign, transforming it into a vibrant pedestrian space. High-quality granite has been extensively utilized in the plaza’s design, enhancing both aesthetics and durability. Additionally, the iconic Ghanta Ghar has been reimagined and seamlessly integrated into the plaza, aligning with the broader vision of the project and contributing to a cohesive urban landscape along the prominent M.A Road.
