Lok Sabha Introduces 3 Bills as Replacements for IPC, CrPC, and Indian Evidence Act

New Delhi, August 11th – Presenting a significant legislative move, Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced three bills in the Lok Sabha on Friday, aiming to replace the archaic British-era statutes – the Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Indian Evidence Act.

The introduced bills are named the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023; the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023; and the Bharatiya Sakshya Bill, 2023. These proposed replacements are slated to undergo thorough examination by a parliamentary panel, as stated by Shah.

During the parliamentary session, Shah underlined the essence of this replacement initiative. He highlighted that the laws to be repealed were originally designed to bolster the British administration’s interests, with a punitive rather than a justice-oriented approach. The envisaged trio of new laws, on the other hand, are formulated to champion the rights of Indian citizens.

Addressing the Lower House of Parliament, Shah asserted, “The primary objective will no longer be merely punitive; instead, it will pivot towards ensuring justice. While punishment will persist, its function will be to instill a deterrent against criminal activities.”

This move by the Union Home Minister marks a significant stride towards modernizing and aligning India’s legal framework with contemporary values and the pursuit of justice.
