New Delhi, Aug 8: In a significant development, Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien has been suspended from the Rajya Sabha for the duration of the Monsoon Session following his alleged unruly behavior. The announcement came from Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Tuesday, amplifying the ongoing tensions within the parliamentary proceedings.
The suspension stemmed from a series of events that unfolded in the session. Earlier, Derek O’Brien had emphasized the Leader of Opposition’s demand for a discussion on Manipur. Amidst the heated exchange, Chairman Dhankhar called on O’Brien to take his seat, but the situation escalated as O’Brien’s actions were deemed disruptive and unruly.
Subsequently, Leader of the House Piyush Goyal moved a motion for Derek O’Brien’s suspension, citing his continuous disruption of proceedings, disobedience towards the Chair, and disturbance within the House. The motion was followed by Goyal’s assertion that O’Brien’s behavior brought disrepute and shame to the august House. The suspension was confirmed by Chairman Dhankhar, who directed O’Brien to leave the House for the remainder of the Monsoon Session.
The decision led to a reaction from Opposition MPs, who raised slogans in protest against the Chairman’s ruling. Notably, this suspension is not an isolated incident, as AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh had also faced a similar fate earlier for his own unruly behavior.
The backdrop of this suspension is the ongoing demand by the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) MPs for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to present a detailed statement on Manipur in both Houses of Parliament and for a subsequent discussion on the matter.
