India Tiger Population Increase
India’s remarkable conservation efforts have yielded a heartening outcome as the tiger population in the country has witnessed a substantial surge. According to recent data, the tiger count has escalated from 1,411 in 2006 to an impressive 3,682 in the year 2022. This momentous achievement highlights the successful endeavors undertaken to preserve and protect these magnificent creatures.
Union Minister of Culture, G Kishan Reddy, shared this promising information in a written response to the Lok Sabha. The surge in tiger numbers stands as a testament to the commitment and dedication of various conservation initiatives across the nation.
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF & CC) has played a pivotal role in safeguarding India’s rich wildlife heritage. Tiger and peacock, symbolic creatures of strength and grace, have been designated as the ‘National Animal’ and ‘National Bird’ respectively. These designations come with special status and protection, in line with the sentiments of the people.
Furthermore, the inclusion of tiger and peacock in the Schedule-I animals of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, ensures the highest level of safeguarding against hunting. Additionally, crucial habitats that support these majestic species have been identified and declared as Protected Areas, reinforcing their conservation.
The increase in India tiger population is a testament to the collective efforts of government agencies, conservation organizations, and local communities. This achievement showcases the positive impact of sustainable conservation practices, habitat restoration, anti-poaching measures, and public awareness campaigns.
