Jammu, July 8: Multiple landslides triggered by heavy overnight rainfall have led to the temporary suspension of traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway and the Mughal Road. The train service between Banihal and Qazigund stations has also been halted for the day.
Several landslides have occurred along the national highway, which serves as the only all-weather road connecting Kashmir with the rest of the country. The affected areas include Mehar, Cafeteria Morh, Keela Morh, Sita Ram Passi, and Panthiyal in Ramban. Additionally, a portion of the road leading to the Panthiyal tunnel has been washed away.
Despite the incessant rains, efforts are underway to clear the road and repair the affected sections. Authorities have advised people not to travel on the highway until the restoration work is completed.
The Mughal Road, an alternative link that connects the border districts of Poonch and Rajouri with the Shopian district in south Kashmir, has also witnessed several landslides near Rata Chambh in Poonch district. Road clearance agencies are actively working to restore traffic flow.
Furthermore, the rail service between Banihal and Qazigund has been suspended for the day due to waterlogging on the railway tracks near Hillar.
The weather forecast predicts widespread moderate to heavy rains, along with thundershowers, across Jammu and Kashmir until Sunday, influenced by monsoon winds and western disturbances.
