Protest Continues as Wrestlers Express Frustration Over Delayed Justice
In a persistent agitation that has stretched over several months, wrestlers have renewed their demand for the arrest of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP from Uttar Pradesh. Wrestler Vinesh Phogat, a prominent figure in the protest, accused the government of shielding Singh, casting doubts on the likelihood of his arrest. The wrestlers had previously suspended their protest after receiving assurances from Sports Minister Anurag Thakur that a charge-sheet against Singh would be filed by June 15. However, with the deadline approaching, the wrestlers’ frustrations grow as they feel justice may be delayed.
The wrestlers initially resumed their agitation against Singh on April 23 at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, with demands for his arrest. While the government has addressed certain demands, such as barring Singh’s family members or associates from contesting WFI polls, the wrestlers believe that the arrest of the WFI chief remains elusive. They recently met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who presented proposals but failed to secure Singh’s arrest, according to Phogat’s remarks. The wrestler voiced her concerns, emphasizing the government’s role in protecting the influential figure.
When asked about the duration of their protest, Phogat expressed uncertainty, stating that the wrestlers would conclude their demonstration upon Singh’s arrest. However, she raised concerns about justice being delayed and questioned the significance of fighting for justice if it arrives late. The wrestlers’ unwavering determination and ongoing protest reflect their frustration and disappointment.
In a separate event, Vinesh Phogat extended her support to the farmers protesting in Punjab’s Patiala district. Joining the farmers’ protest led by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-political), Phogat emphasized that staging protests for their rightful demands should not be necessary in a country where governments are meant to work for the people rather than harass them. She called upon the government to listen to the concerns of the protesting farmers.
The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-political) has been staging a protest against the Punjab government outside the office of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited. Their demands primarily revolve around issues related to power supply, including the installation of smart meters and delays in providing new electricity connections to farmers. Phogat’s show of solidarity with the farmers highlights the unity and support among those advocating for their rights in various sectors of society.
