Jambu Zoo in Jammu Welcomes Diverse Inmates from 17 Different Species

Jammu, June 1: The recently inaugurated Jambu Zoo in Jammu has begun housing a diverse range of animals, including leopards, black bears, deer, and various bird species, according to officials. Spanning over 3,200 kanals of land on the outskirts of Jammu, the zoo aims to establish itself as a prominent wildlife attraction. Despite facing delays since its conception in 2016, the zoo has finally opened its doors to the public.

Amit Sharma, the Wildlife Warden of Jambu Zoo, expressed enthusiasm about the zoo’s progress, stating that they have already introduced 17 different species of animals, including peacocks, nilgai, wild boars, swans, and monkeys. Sharma further emphasized their commitment to expanding the zoo’s inhabitants in the future, with plans to introduce additional species, thus bringing them on par with other renowned zoos across the country.

Although the concept plan for Jambu Zoo was approved by the Central Zoo Authority of India in 2016, the execution faced multiple delays due to various reasons. The project initially received funding from the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority but experienced a halt in funding. Eventually, support was received from the Jammu and Kashmir Infrastructure Development Finance Corporation to resume construction. However, the COVID-19 pandemic further disrupted progress for two years. Despite the challenges, the team remained determined to complete the project as soon as possible, resulting in the recent inauguration.

Apart from the diverse array of animal species, Jambu Zoo also offers additional attractions such as an open amusement theatre, a children’s park, and a small water body. To enhance visitor experience and ease movement within the zoo, battery-operated cars and bicycles are available.

With its inauguration, Jambu Zoo is poised to become a significant wildlife destination in the region, providing an educational and enjoyable experience for visitors of all ages.
