Election Commission Grants National Party Status to AAP, Withdraws Status of TMC, CPI, and NCP

The Election Commission of India has granted national party status to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) while withdrawing the national party status of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Communist Party of India (CPI), and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

In its recent decision, the Election Commission recognized the AAP as a national party after the party fulfilled the required criteria, including securing a minimum of two percent of the total votes in the Lok Sabha elections or Assembly elections in at least three states.

On the other hand, the TMC, CPI, and NCP failed to retain their national party status after they failed to secure the required percentage of votes in the recent elections. The TMC, CPI, and NCP will now be considered as state parties and will not have the privileges that come with being a national party.

The decision of the Election Commission is significant as it determines the level of influence and recognition that a political party holds in India. The national party status grants a party privileges such as a reserved symbol, access to free airtime on state-run television, and eligibility to receive donations from corporate entities.

The AAP’s recognition as a national party is a significant achievement for the party, which was founded in 2012 and has rapidly gained popularity in Delhi and other parts of India. Meanwhile, the TMC, CPI, and NCP will have to work harder to regain their national party status and the privileges that come with it.
