PDP protests in Srinagar against property tax

SRINAGAR: Led by Chief Spokesperson Suhail Bukhari, the People’s Democratic Party on Saturday marched a protest in Srinagar against the imposition of property tax in Jammu and Kashmir

The party took out a protest march from the party headquarters near Sher-e-Kashmir Park.

Dozens of PDP activists raised slogans against the imposition of the property tax and demanded its roll-back. The protesters who were trying to march towards the Lal Chowk city centre, were stopped by police near the Traffic Headquarters, before turning back and dispersing.

Alleging that the government was trying to economically weaken the people of the region, Bukhari said that with the economic situation worsening with each passing day in the UT, the imposition of property tax will hit the people the most.

“People expected the government to support them in their difficult times, but the LG’s administration is instead adding to their woes,” he said.

It is pertinent to mention here that Jammu and Kashmir had issued earlier this week on the imposition of property tax in municipal areas from April 1. The tax rates will be five per cent of taxable annual value for residential properties and six per cent for commercial properties, it stated.
