Rain and snowfall forecast in several parts of the country including Delhi-NCR

The India Meteorological Department has predicted light to heavy rain in several parts of the north Indian states including Delhi and NCR. Cloudy skies have already engulfed several parts of these states. Light rainfall and snowfall have occurred at isolated places over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muaffarabad and a few other places. A few places in east Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh experienced light rainfall during the day.

Light to moderate to scattered rainfall is very likely over Western Himalayan region on during 24th to 26th January, 2023. Similarly, isolated heavy rainfall and snowfall is likely over Jammu-Kashir-Ladakh-Gilgit and other places, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand may also experience similar situations on 24th and 25th January, 2023.

A fresh Western Disturbance is likely to affect northwest India from night of 27th January, 2023. It is very likely to cause light or moderate and fairly widespread to widespread rainfall and snowfall with isolated heavy falls over Western Himalayan region and light to moderate isolated to scattered rainfall over plains of northwest India on 28th & 29th January, 2023.

In the meantime, in the last 48 hours, the people of North India got a slight respite from the severe cold. The weather may change from Tuesday. The India Meteorological Department has predicted snowfall in hill states and rain in some states.

An official of the India Meteorological Department said that light rain may occur in many parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh on January 24, 25 and 26. Rain and snowfall are forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday in Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh. There may be heavy rain or snowfall in Uttarakhand on 25 and 26 January. During this, heavy avalanches are expected in some areas of Jammu and Kashmir.

This official has said that Joshimath, the major centre of geological activity in Uttarakhand, is also expected to receive rain and snowfall on Tuesday and Wednesday. In this regard, Chamoli District Magistrate Himanshu Khurana has said that the nodal officer has been instructed to make arrangements for blankets, heaters and generators in the relief camp.

Owing to precarious weather conditions, Indian Railways has fully cancelled 277 trains and 39 partially cancelled on Tuesday. This information was given by an officer related to railway operations. According to this official, the railways have changed the timetable of 25 trains and the route of eight. Among the cancelled trains are Shatabdi, Janshatabdi, and several superfast and express trains. These include trains running from West Bengal, Maharashtra, Punjab, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Goa and other states.
