Jammu and Kashmir Anticipates Dry Weather with Evening Showers

Srinagar, June 7: According to a meteorological department official, Jammu and Kashmir are expected to experience mainly dry weather on Wednesday, with a slight chance of rain and thunderstorms in scattered areas towards the evening.

The official stated that from June 8-12, predominantly dry weather conditions are anticipated, although there is a possibility of brief showers and thunderstorms in the evening, albeit with a low chance of occurrence (10-20%).

Regarding temperatures, Srinagar recorded a minimum of 12.4°C, slightly higher than the previous night’s 11.2°C, but still 1.0°C below the normal range for the summer capital.

Qazigund, the gateway town of Kashmir, registered a minimum of 11.2°C, compared to the previous night’s 9.2°C, indicating a deviation of 0.8°C below the normal temperature.

In Pahalgam, the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, the minimum temperature was recorded at 6.0°C, just slightly below the previous night’s 5.9°C, resulting in a deviation of 1.0°C below the normal range.

In Kupwara town, the mercury settled at 11.2°C, higher than the previous night’s 9.2°C, but still 0.5°C below the normal temperature for the north Kashmir region.

The officials reported that Kokernag recorded a minimum of 8.4°C, the same as the previous night, but with a deviation of 3.4°C below the normal range for the area.

Gulmarg, the renowned skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, witnessed a minimum temperature of 6.0°C, compared to the previous night’s 5.0°C, indicating a deviation of 2.1°C below the normal range.

In Jammu, the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir, the minimum temperature was recorded at 23.0°C, higher than the previous night’s 21.4°C, but still 2.7°C below the normal range.

Other areas in the region also experienced variations from the normal range, with Banihal recording a minimum of 12.2°C, Batote at 13.0°C, Katra at 19.0°C, and Bhaderwah at 10.4°C.

In Ladakh, Leh registered a minimum temperature of 2.4°C, while Kargil recorded 10.4°C.

Plantation Drive conducted in District Jail Bhadarwah under Mission-LIFE

Bhadarwah June 06 : Continuing with Union Government’s flagship banner ‘Mission Life’ Forest Department and NCC cadets joined hands with jail authorties to carry plantation drive and motivational lecture on importance of forest for inmates at District Jail Bhaderwah.

The drive in which Chinar and Cedar saplings were planted in jail premises was primarily aimed at to raise awareness among inmates of jail and students about the importance of green cover in our life.

The plantation drive was initiated with the motivational lecture by DFO Bhaderwah Chander Shekhar. He briefed the students, NCC cadets and inmates about the importance of planting trees as these are the life line for survival on Earth.

DFO also explained the benefits of planting saplings with their common and scientific names. He motivated the students and inmates to plant saplings and also to take ample steps to protect the environment.

NCC cadets of Higher secondary school Bhaderwah and inmates enthusiastically participated in the plantation drive which witnessed planting of saplings of Chinar, Cedar, Kail. Medicinal, herbal and a few ornamental saplings were also planted during this drive.

On the occasion, Superintendent Jail Mushtaq Malla briefed the aims of the ‘Mission Life’ campaign for the individuals and communities.

“The campaign aims to encourage environmental friendly practices in the daily use such as use cloth bags for shopping instead of plastic bags, carrying out own water bottles whenever possible, turning off running taps when not in active use and planting more and more trees to reduce the impact of pollution etc,” said Chander Shekhar, DFO Bhaderwah.

Indian Army Prepares for Amarnath Yatra Following Successful G20 Summit in Kashmir

Srinagar, June 7: Demonstrating their commitment to “service before self,” the formidable Indian Army has ensured the successful conclusion of the G20 summit in Kashmir despite numerous challenges. Now, the Indian Army is fully prepared to safeguard the sacred Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage in Kashmir.

Lt. Gen. Amardeep Singh Aujla, a commanding officer in the Indian Army, reassured that the overall situation in Kashmir is “quite favorable.” He stated, “The general situation in the valley is under control. There has been no infiltration this year… We have successfully completed the G20 meetings. Our counter-infiltration measures on the ground are robust and effective.”

Addressing the issue of radicalization in the region, Lt. Gen. Aujla acknowledged increased efforts but emphasized a reduced impact. He pointed out that social media plays a significant role in radicalization, particularly among the youth. However, he expressed confidence that the younger generation is becoming more discerning and aware, urging them to distinguish between right and wrong.

Furthermore, Lt. Gen. Aujla assured that the Indian Army is fully prepared to tackle any unforeseen cross-border threats, highlighting their solid and robust defense capabilities.

However, the commanding officer expressed concern regarding the rise of “Narco-Terrorism,” also known as drug-based terrorism, in the region.

Body of Non-Local Individual Discovered in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar, June 5, 2023 : In a tragic incident, a non-local resident was discovered dead in the city of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir on Monday. The individual has been identified as Arun Kumar from Ranchi, Jharkhand, according to the police.

Reportedly, the non-local individual was found unconscious in the Rajbagh area of Srinagar. He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where medical professionals pronounced him dead upon arrival. The police have initiated inquest proceedings in accordance with the law.

Further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident and the cause of death are currently awaited. The authorities are conducting investigations to determine the exact events leading to this unfortunate incident.

GOC-in-C Northern Command calls on Lt Governor

SRINAGAR, JUNE 05: General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) Northern Command, Lt General Upendra Dwivedi called on Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha at Raj Bhavan, yesterday.

He discussed the present security scenario with the Lt Governor and also briefed him on the elaborate security arrangements made by the security forces for Shri Amarnathji Yatra, 2023.

The Lt Governor appreciated the role played by the Indian Army in restoring and preserving peace in the Union Territory.

Director Rural Sanitation visits B’la; takes stock of different SBM (G) Assets

Directs Officers to ensure saturation of all SBM-G Verticals for achieving ODF+ Status by 15th August

Interacts with PRIs at Tangmarg; Urges them to play proactive role for sustainability of Behavioral Change

BARAMULLA, JUNE 05: In order to scale up efforts towards achieving complete saturation in rural hygiene and cleanliness, Director Rural Sanitation, Charandeep Singh yesterday paid visit to Baramulla and took appraisal of different projects being executed under the centrally sponsored Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM-G).

At the outset, the Director took inspection of the land patch at Palhallan Pattan that has been identified for the construction of Plastic Waste Management Unit. He also inspected the Solid Waste Management Shed at Palhallan which has been completed under the SBM.

Similarly, the Director also inspected several other SBM verticals including Community Sanitary Complexes (CSC), Segregation Sheds, compost pits, soak pits etc being constructed at different locations of the district wherein he emphasised to accelerate the pace of work so that such projects are completed well within the stipulated timeframe.

Meanwhile, Assistant Commissioner Panchayat Baramulla, Gulzar Ahmad Khan briefed the director about the pace and position of all SBM Verticals besides presenting a brief sketch of activities and measures that are being carried out to achieve complete Sanitation of rural areas.

After taking the holistic review of all works, Charandeep Singh emphasised the officers to work in tandem with prominent stakeholders of the society so that all the underlined objectives as envisaged in SBM-II are realized. He added that sustainability of behavioral change is the pre-requisite for achieving ODF+ status, the declaration of which is said to be made on 15th of August this year during celebration of 75 years of independence in line with the ambitious Azadi Ka Amrit Mohatsav.

On the occassion, the ACP Baramulla highlighted the range of activities being carried out in the district and said that our focus largely remained on enthusing hygienic behaviours among the people by providing different interventions for the safe management of solid and liquid waste.

Gulzar Ahmad further said that proper functionality of all verticals of SBM is being reinforced for ensuring saturation in all villages that will definitely pave the way for declaration of villages as ODF plus Model within the given time line.

Later, the Director held an interactive session with the PRIs at Tangmarg during which they appraised the chair of their issues and demands related to the sanitation of rural areas. Some PRIs also demanded community sanitary complexes based on the persistent demand of the public.

The Director had a patient hearing during which he urged them to play a proactive role for achieving complete sanitation of villages. He added that PRIs constitute vital stakeholders of society and they can easily motivate masses for adopting hygienic practices.

Moreover, the Director urged people to play their part and cooperate with the administration so that the ambition and mission of ‘clean and green villages’ is realized in letter and spirit.

Among others, ACD Baramulla Shabir Ahmad Hakak, District Panchayat Officer Baramulla Jaleel Ahmad Mir, BDOs and other functionaries were present on the occasion.

CSIR-IIIM organises ‘One Week One Lab Campaign’

Dr. Jitendra Singh inaugurates 2 day Lavender Festival at Bhaderwah

BHADERWAH, JUNE 5: It is a moment of pride for all of us as Bhaderwah has emerged as the Lavender capital of India and Agri StartUp destination.

This was stated here yesterday by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science & Technology; MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space Dr. Jitendra Singh while inaugurating the 2 -day Lavender festival here.

CSIR- Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine, Jammu has organised the event as part of its ‘One Week One Lab Campaign’.

Dr Jitendra Singh described Bhaderwah as the birthplace of India’s Purple Revolution and the destination of Agri-StartUps.

The Minister said that the valley of Bhaderwah is the best example of development of the present progressive government at the centre which should have been celebrated much earlier, Bhaderwah being the best place for lavender cultivation in terms of land and climate.

Dr. Jitendra Singh while referring to the lavender cultivation in the region, said that Lavender is an avenue of employment generation and research opening many paradigms of development

The lavender cultivation has changed the lives of many farmers and it is heartening to note that Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, in the 99th Edition of Mann ki Baat, appreciated the efforts of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research- Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (CSIR-IIIM) in supporting farmers in the cultivation of Lavender in the Bhaderwah, Doda district, J&K under CSIR-Aroma Mission. He said, “Farmers had been engaged in traditional maize cultivation for decades, but some farmers thought of doing something different. They turned to floriculture, that is, the cultivation of flowers. Today, around two and a half thousand farmers are cultivating Lavender here. They have also been handheld through the Aroma Mission of the Central Government. This new cultivation has greatly increased the income of the farmers.”

The CSIR-Aroma Mission is a flagship project of CSIR under which Lavender cultivation is being promoted in the temperate regions of J&K. The aim of the project is to increase the income of small and marginal farmers and develop agriculture-based Startups. The project is being directly monitored by Dr. Jitendra Singh, Hon’ble Union Minister of State (IC) of the Ministry of Science & Technology. Under his directions, CSIR-IIIM is implementing Lavender cultivation in Bhaderwah and other parts of J&K.

It is important to mention that over many decades of scientific interventions, the CSIR-IIIM has developed its elite variety (RRL-12) and agrotechnology of Lavender. The variety of Lavender is highly suitable for cultivation in the rainfed temperate regions of India. Under CSIR-Aroma Mission, CSIR-IIIM introduced Lavender and provided more than 30 Lakh free Lavender plants to the farmers of different districts of J&K. The end-to-end technology package for cultivation, processing, value addition, and marketing of the Lavender crop were also provided to the farmers. CSIR-IIIM installed fifty distillation units (45 fixed and five mobile) at different locations across J&K to support farmers in processing their produce.

Many small and marginal maize farmers in the temperate regions of the Jammu division have successfully adopted Lavender. Lavender cultivation has employed large numbers of farmers and young entrepreneurs in the geographically remote regions of J&K. Due to the intervention of CSIR-IIIM, a new industry around Lavender cultivation has developed in the region. More than 2500 farmers are cultivating Lavender in different parts of J&K. Women are primarily employed in the Lavender fields for harvesting and processing the flower, which has increased women’s income in the region. Many young entrepreneurs have started small-scale businesses through the value addition of Lavender oil, hydrosol, and flowers. CSIR-IIIM conducted many skills development programs and trained more than 2500 farmers and young entrepreneurs from J&K on Lavender cultivation, processing, value addition, and marketing.

The net annual income of farmers who switched from maize to Lavender cultivation has increased many folds from around Rs. 40,000/- to Rs. 60,000/- per hectare to Rs. 3,50,000/- to Rs. 6,00,000/- per hectare. Farmers of the Bhaderwah, Doda district, produced 300, 500, 800, and 1500 Litres of Lavender oil in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022, respectively. They earned Rs. 5 Crore between 2018-2022 by selling dry flowers, Lavender plants and Lavender oil. The successful end-to-end technology transfer on the cultivation of Lavender to the farmers of J&K by CSIR-IIIM, Jammu, under Aroma Mission has been widely covered nationally and internationally by print and electronic media. The media has recognized this initiative of CSIR-IIIM as the “Purple Revolution.” CSIR-IIIM received the CSIR award for S&T innovations for rural development (CAIRD- 2020) for Purple Revolution in Jammu & Kashmir: Rural Development Through Lavender Cultivation in J&K.

MeT Forecasts Warmer Days in J&K Following Below-Normal Temperatures

Srinagar, June 5: Despite a slight increase, night temperatures in Jammu and Kashmir continued to remain below normal, according to the meteorological department. The summer capital, Srinagar, recorded a low of 11.3°C, which was 2.1°C below the normal temperature. Similarly, Qazigund, Pahalgam, Kupwara, Kokernag, Gulmarg, and other regions also experienced temperatures below their respective averages.

Meanwhile, the meteorological department predicts mainly dry weather in the region from June 5-12, with a possibility of brief showers and thunderstorms in the evenings. However, there is good news as temperatures are expected to gradually increase, signaling warmer days ahead.
