No Land in Ladakh Occupied by China, Affirms LG Mishra

JAMMU, September 11: Ladakh’s Lieutenant Governor, B.D. Mishra, emphasized on Monday that not a single square inch of Indian territory has been occupied by China. He also asserted that the Indian armed forces are fully prepared to deliver a strong response to any misadventure.

When asked about Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s comments regarding China’s occupation of a significant portion of Ladakh’s land, Mishra stated, “I won’t comment on anybody’s statement. But I will state the facts because I have personally witnessed on the ground that China has not occupied even one square inch of our land.” He added, “Whatever happened in 1962 is immaterial. But today, we are in control of our land down to the last inch.”

Mishra, a retired Brigadier, was in Jammu to attend the three-day North Tech Symposium organized by the Army.

In response to reporters’ inquiries during the event, he affirmed, “Our armed forces are prepared for any eventuality, and God forbid if a conflict arises, those who engage with us will face a strong response.” He noted that the morale of the troops is exceptionally high and their intent is to defend every inch of land. “No one can dare to encroach upon Indian territory with the intention of establishing a foothold here. I believe that credit goes to the exceptional leadership under Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he added.

Regarding the identification and procurement of weapons for deployment along the Line of Control (LoC) to enhance security, Mishra confirmed that these efforts are underway. He also highlighted the progress made in indigenizing military equipment, noting that when he joined the Army in 1961, most equipment was imported, but today, almost everything used is indigenous.

Omar Abdullah Applauds Supreme Court Ruling Regarding Ladakh Elections

Srinagar, September 6th: Omar Abdullah, a prominent leader of the National Conference (NC), expressed his satisfaction with the Supreme Court’s decision to grant the “plough” symbol to his party, asserting that the BJP and the Ladakh administration had made every effort to obstruct their rights, but the court recognized their cause.

In a tweet, Abdullah stated, “@JKNC_ has received the verdict we sought and deserved. The Honorable Supreme Court granted us our symbol, the plough, earlier this morning.” He alleged that the BJP, with the support of a biased Ladakh administration, had done everything in its power to thwart them.

“The court saw through this and penalized them by imposing a fine of ₹1 lakh on the administration. Congratulations to @JkncKargil, and a heartfelt thank you to @ShariqJReyaz for his exceptional advocacy before the High Court and Supreme Court,” he added.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court invalidated the August 5th notification from the election department regarding the Ladakh hill council polls, instructing the issuance of a fresh notification within seven days. Justices Vikram Nath and Ahsanuddin Amanullah also dismissed the Ladakh administration’s objection to the allocation of the “plough” symbol to the NC and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on it.

Previously, the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court had rejected the Ladakh administration’s appeal against a single-bench order allowing NC candidates to run in the upcoming elections for the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Kargil, under the party symbol.

The administration had approached a division bench of the high court in response to the single-bench order from August 9th, which directed the NC to approach the Election Department of the Ladakh administration to confirm the reserved symbol “plough” already allotted for the polls.

As per the election department’s notification on August 5th, the LAHDC, Kargil, elections for 26 out of 30 seats are scheduled for September 10th, with vote counting occurring four days later.

  • Rahul Brings Up Ladakh Border Issue with China

Rahul Brings Up Ladakh Border Issue with China

Kargil, August 25th – Reviving the contentious border matter, Rahul Gandhi, a prominent figure in the Congress party, asserted on Friday that the inhabitants of Ladakh are well aware of China’s encroachment on Indian territory. He contradicted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assertion that no land had been seized by stating that this claim was “completely untrue.”

Gandhi’s comments followed a recent exchange between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping during an informal conversation on the sidelines of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) summit in Johannesburg. During his nine-day tour of Ladakh, where he addressed a public gathering on the final day, Gandhi mentioned that his firsthand visit to the region had affirmed China’s occupation of significant stretches of Indian land, particularly near Pangong Lake.

He remarked, “Ladakh holds strategic significance, and from my recent motorcycle journey through the region, it was glaringly evident that China has seized thousands of kilometers of our land. Regrettably, the prime minister’s statement during an opposition meeting that no part of our land was lost is categorically false.”

Gandhi claimed that the residents of Ladakh were well-acquainted with the fact that China had encroached upon Indian territory, accusing the prime minister of deception. This was not the first time Gandhi had raised the border issue during his Ladakh tour. Earlier, he contested Modi’s assertion that China hadn’t occupied any land in Ladakh.

India’s Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra had previously communicated India’s concerns about unresolved border issues along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) to President Xi. Kwatra emphasized that maintaining peace along border areas was crucial for normalizing India-China relations. The strained ties between the two nations stem from the Eastern Ladakh border dispute that began in May 2020.

Despite diplomatic and military discussions leading to disengagement in some areas, Indian and Chinese troops remain locked in a standoff in certain friction points in eastern Ladakh. During his public address, Gandhi pledged support to the Leh-based Apex body and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), advocating for their demands for full statehood and safeguards under the sixth schedule of the Constitution. He assured that the Congress party would oppose any attempts by the BJP to hand over the resource-rich lands of Ladakh to corporate entities.

Gandhi’s discourse also touched upon Ladakh’s need for political representation, cultural preservation, employment opportunities, and infrastructure improvement. He underscored Congress’ solidarity with these causes and criticized BJP’s alleged intentions to favor corporate interests.

Both the Apex body and KDA are jointly advocating for four-point demands, including full statehood, constitutional safeguards, separate parliamentary constituencies, and job opportunities for Ladakh’s youth. These entities emerged after the special status of Jammu and Kashmir was revoked, leading to the creation of Union territories.

Gandhi concluded his speech by reaffirming his commitment to raising Ladakh’s concerns in the upcoming parliamentary session. Following his address, he interacted with attendees, and prominent political figures from Ladakh and other regions were present at the public rally, including leaders from the Ladakh Congress and National Conference.

Exploring ‘Climate Optimism’ Through Art: Artists at Sā Ladakh, Asia’s Highest Land Art Exhibition

Leh (Ladakh), August 23rd: An extraordinary gathering of artists from diverse backgrounds has converged in the awe-inspiring expanse of Sā Ladakh, situated at the highest elevation in South Asia, to unveil their breathtaking creations at a one-of-a-kind art exhibition. Commencing on August 1, 2023, this remarkable event has become a focal point for climate, culture, and community.

Against the backdrop of Sā Ladakh’s stunning scenery, artists have harnessed their creative potential to convey a crucial message: the urgent need to conserve our planet’s precious natural resources and foster a profound reverence for nature. In the face of dire climatic challenges, including the looming threat of global warming, the artworks encompass captivating site-specific installations, cutting-edge video projections, and sculptures that invite viewers to explore the concept of climate optimism.

The exhibition boasts contributions from an array of Ladakhi, Indian, and international artists, including Nikolaus Geyrhalter, Phillip Frank, Sharbendu De, Jigmet Angmo, Vibha Galhotra, Skarma Sonam Tashi, Tsering Gurmet Kungyam, Sagardeep Singh, and Tsering Motup. Founded in 2023 by Tenzing ‘Jammy’ Jamyang, Raki Nikahetiya, and Sagardeep Singh, Sā Ladakh stands as a pioneering initiative, uniting artists, organizations, and communities to create the highest contemporary land art exhibition in South Asia at an astonishing altitude of 3600m. This initiative seeks to inspire dialogue, nurture creative solutions, and empower individuals to become agents of change.

Speaking to ANI, artist Vibha Galhotra, renowned for her work both in India and on the international stage, emphasized the message of achieving ‘equality’ between humanity and nature. Her text-based artwork, part of the exhibition, continues her exploration of themes related to land ownership. Galhotra’s perspective has evolved in response to the current climatic crisis. She shared, “This work is the voice of nature itself, reminding us that we are mere travelers in its realm. There should be equality between nature and humans; we need to restore balance and coexist.”

Another featured artist, Sharbendu De, also a scholar and writer, addresses climate concerns through his projections. His work presents a narrative of people adapting to the challenges of the near future instead of focusing on physical catastrophes. De explained, “Rather than showing the physical catastrophic visuals, my narrative is about people surviving the coming near future.”

On August 23rd, the closing day of Sā Ladakh, supported by the German Embassy, artists like Philipp Frank from Germany will explore the connections between spirituality and the natural world through his renowned projections.

Co-founder of Sā Ladakh, Raki Nikahetiya, shared their vision, stating, “Our primary focus will be on a 20-acre expanse of land, where we will delve into our interpretation of ‘climate optimism.’ Through the remarkable medium of land art, our aim is to foster an inclusive dialogue on climate-related issues, engaging and inspiring communities amidst the breathtaking yet delicate Himalayan landscape.”

As part of a series of workshops, students from the Islamia Public School in Leh participated voluntarily, gaining valuable exposure and a deeper connection to learning about climate change and the environment.

Sā Ladakh’s land art exhibition is Germany’s cultural contribution to India’s G20 presidency. The initiative has garnered significant appreciation, fostering collaboration and dialogue among artists and communities while advocating for a more harmonious relationship between humanity and the environment.

Ongoing India-China Talks Aim to Resolve Eastern Ladakh Issues

New Delhi, August 21: Signaling a potential breakthrough in their long-standing disputes, the Indian and Chinese armies are engaged in marathon discussions to address pending issues in the Demchok and Depsang plains. This ongoing effort marks a positive step towards resolving the protracted standoff in Eastern Ladakh.

According to sources within the defense establishment, talks at the Major General level have been underway at Daulat Beg Oldie and Chushul since Friday morning. The discussions are intermittent, with breaks, and are focused on finding solutions to the unresolved matters.

Since the outbreak of tensions in Eastern Ladakh following Chinese aggression in 2020, the two sides have participated in 19 rounds of talks in an attempt to address the boundary issues. The current talks at the Major General level are a continuation of the dialogue initiated during the Corps Commander level meetings.

Representing India are Major General PK Mishra, the Commander of the Trishul Division, and Major General Hariharan, the Uniform Force Commander. Both officials are stationed at separate locations for the discussions.

The basis of these talks stems from the outcomes of the 19th round of Corps Commander-level discussions that took place on August 13 and 14 at the Chushul Moldo border meeting point.

Several legacy issues are being addressed in these talks, including the resumption of patrolling activities in the Depsang plains and the matter of Chinese military presence at the CNN junction.

For the past three years, India and China have been locked in a standoff situation, leading to strained relations at various levels due to the border tensions. The Eastern Ladakh sector has seen the deployment of over 50,000 troops from both countries along the Line of Actual Control.

Prior to the current talks, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval engaged in extensive discussions with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Subsequently, the 19th round of corps commander talks was held, marking a resumption after a four-month hiatus.

    Rahul Gandhi tribute

New Delhi, August 19: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi embarked on a bike ride to Pangong Lake in Ladakh on Saturday to celebrate his father and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s birthday on August 20, officials said.

Taking to the social media platform, Instagram, Rahul Gandhi wrote, “On our way to Pangong Lake, which my father used to say, is one of the most beautiful places in the world.”

This is Rahul’s first visit to Ladakh since Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated into two Union Territories, Ladakh and J-K, following the removal of Articles 370 and 35 (A) on August 5, 2019.

Rahul Gandhi arrived in Leh to begin his two-day visit to the Union Territory on Thursday but his tour was extended till August 25, party sources said.

On Friday he interacted with youth in Leh.

The source further said that he will also watch a football match in Leh. Rahul has been a footballer player during his college days.

He will also participate in the meeting of the 30-member Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC)-Kargil elections on August 25.

Congress and National Conference have forged a pre-poll alliance against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the Kargil council polls scheduled to be held on September 10.

Although the Congress MP visited Srinagar and Jammu twice earlier this year, he, however, did not travel to Ladakh.

In January, the Congress leader visited Jammu and Srinagar during his Bharat Jodo Yatra. Again on a personal visit in February, he visited the Gulmarg ski resort.
