New Delhi, Oct 17: The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the constitutional validity of Section 6A of the Citizenship Act, which deals with granting Indian citizenship to illegal immigrants in Assam, in a 4:1 majority verdict.

A five-judge Constitution bench, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, ruled that the Assam Accord, which Section 6A is based on, was a political solution to address illegal migration in the state. Justices Surya Kant, M.M. Sundresh, and Manoj Misra concurred in the majority verdict, affirming that Parliament had the legislative authority to enact the provision. However, Justice Pardiwala dissented, declaring Section 6A unconstitutional.
