PM Modi Describes 17th Lok Sabha as Golden Era in Parliamentary History

New Delhi, June 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Om Birla on his reelection as the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha, emphasizing the significant responsibility associated with holding this position for a second term during the Amrit Kaal.

PM Modi hailed the tenure of Om Birla as the Speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha, describing it as a golden period in parliamentary history. “Respected Speaker, it is a privilege for the House that you are serving in this capacity for the second time. On behalf of the entire House, I extend my heartfelt congratulations. Your experience and leadership are crucial as we look forward to your guidance over the next 5 years. Your infectious smile keeps the entire House in good spirits,” he remarked.

Acknowledging Birla’s record of being elected Speaker twice, PM Modi drew parallels with Balram Jakhar’s tenure, noting the inspirational style of leadership that motivates young MPs.

Reflecting on the achievements of the 17th Lok Sabha under Birla’s stewardship, PM Modi highlighted its pivotal role in shaping India’s future. “The landmark legislations passed during your tenure, including laws on women empowerment, Jammu and Kashmir’s reorganization, citizen security, social welfare, digital privacy, and consumer protection, have laid a robust foundation for the nation,” he asserted.

PM Modi commended Birla for achieving the highest productivity rate in 25 years during the 17th Lok Sabha, reaching 97%. He also praised Birla’s proactive approach during the COVID-19 pandemic, where despite challenges, parliamentary productivity increased by 170%.

Following a voice vote, Om Birla was declared Speaker of the lower house by pro-tem speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab amidst affirmations of ‘Ayes’ and ‘Noes’. The opposition’s candidate, K Suresh, did not insist on a division vote.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi extended his felicitations to Birla and joined Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and PM Modi in escorting Birla to the Speaker’s chair, marking the commencement of his second term.
