New Delhi, Jun 26: Congratulating Om Birla on being re-elected as Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday expressed hope that the Opposition would be allowed to voice the concerns of the people in the House.
Gandhi emphasized the importance of cooperation and trust for the effective functioning of the House. “I’d like to congratulate you on your successful election… I congratulate you on behalf of the entire INDIA alliance. This House represents the voice of the people of India. While the government holds political power, the opposition also embodies the people’s voice,” the Congress leader said.
He expressed the Opposition’s willingness to assist in the Speaker’s work and confidence that the Speaker would permit the Opposition to express itself in the House. Gandhi highlighted the increased representation of the Opposition in this term, stressing the importance of their voice being heard.
“The question is not just about running the House efficiently, but how much of India’s voice is allowed to be heard in the House,” Gandhi stated. He underscored that silencing the Opposition is a non-democratic idea, asserting that the recent election reflected the people’s expectation for the Opposition to defend the Constitution.
Gandhi concluded by expressing confidence that by allowing the Opposition to speak, the Speaker would fulfill his duty of defending the Constitution of India.
