EC Initiates Electoral Roll Update for Haryana, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, and J&K

New Delhi, Jun 21 : The Election Commission announced on Friday that it has commenced preparations for the upcoming assembly elections in Haryana, Maharashtra, and Jharkhand by initiating the process of updating electoral rolls in these states.

The qualifying date for this update has been set as July 1, 2024.

In the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, the electoral rolls were updated with January 1 as the qualifying date.

The qualifying date helps determine the number of eligible voters on a specific date within a state or across the country.

The current terms of the legislative assemblies in Haryana, Maharashtra, and Jharkhand are scheduled to end on November 3, November 26, and January 5, 2025, respectively. Elections for these assemblies must be conducted before the completion of their terms.

Additionally, elections in Jammu and Kashmir are also slated to be held to establish a new legislative assembly following the delimitation of constituencies.

“After observing substantial voter turnout in the recent Lok Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the Commission has instructed the updation of electoral rolls in the Union Territory with July 1, 2024, as the qualifying date,” the Election Commission stated.
