Heavy Rains in Sri Lanka Leave 10 Dead, 5 Missing

Sri Lanka : Ten individuals lost their lives, with five others reported missing, as relentless heavy rains and powerful winds swept across Sri Lanka over the past 24 hours, according to the Disaster Management Center (DMC). The majority of fatalities occurred in the capital city of Colombo, where rainfall exceeded 150 mm since early Sunday, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

In response to the crisis, the Health Ministry issued directives to health directors across provinces, urging them to remain vigilant and prepared for any emergencies in hospitals. Additionally, arrangements were made to airlift critically ill patients from rural areas to larger hospitals as flooding intensified.

The Department of Meteorology issued a warning for heavy rainfall across the country over the next 48 hours, while the DMC confirmed ongoing rescue operations to assist those affected.

Members of the public were advised to remain indoors and avoid flooded areas for safety reasons. Recognizing the severity of the situation, the Education Ministry announced the closure of all schools on Monday in anticipation of further rainfall.
