The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued the first set of citizenship certificates to 14 individuals under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) on May 15, 2024, after the notification of the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024 on March 11, 2024
Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla personally handed over the certificates to the successful applicants in New Delhi. The recipients belonged to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi, and Christian communities from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan who had entered India before December 31, 2014, due to religious persecution or the fear of such persecution
