Dhaka, May 14 – Harmanpreet Kaur, the captain of the Indian women’s cricket team, expressed confidence that her squad would be among the potential semifinalists in the upcoming T20 World Cup, with victory over the formidable ‘Southern Stars’ crucial to their quest for a maiden global title.
Scheduled to be held in Bangladesh from October 3-20, Harmanpreet is banking on her team’s familiarity with the conditions to secure victory in the tournament. India has been drawn in Group A alongside six-time champions Australia, along with New Zealand, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Group B comprises South Africa, England, 2016 champions West Indies, Bangladesh, and Scotland.
Asked to predict the semifinalists, Harmanpreet, who recently led India to a 5-0 whitewash of Bangladesh in a T20I series in Sylhet, named India, Australia, England, and South Africa as her top picks. She emphasized the competitive nature of Australia, foreseeing them as a significant challenge for her team.
Despite India’s recent competitive performances against Australia, including in global events, where Australia clinched victories in the Women’s T20 World Cup final in 2020 and the Commonwealth Games final in 2022, as well as defeating India in the 2023 T20 World Cup semifinal, Harmanpreet remains hopeful that a strong showing against Australia would instill confidence in her team.
Reflecting on India’s recent success against Bangladesh, Harmanpreet noted that the familiarity gained with the conditions would work in their favor. However, she acknowledged the challenges of facing Bangladesh, particularly in their home territory, where the crowd support would be in their favor.
Regarding India’s past experiences in World Cups, Harmanpreet highlighted the team’s performance in ICC events but emphasized the need to win close games to secure success in the upcoming tournament.
