SRINAGAR, Apr 1: The National Conference (NC) announced Mian Altaf Ahmad as its candidate for the Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha seat in Jammu and Kashmir. NC Vice President Omar Abdullah revealed the decision on behalf of party president Farooq Abdullah, with Ahmad present at the announcement, as per a party spokesperson.
Ahmad, a seasoned NC leader, has been chosen for the South Kashmir Pir Panjal parliamentary seat due to his extensive popularity across various sections of society. Abdullah expressed confidence in Ahmad’s ability to garner significant support from the people.
The Anantnag constituency, encompassing the Pir Panjal range and including Rajouri and Poonch areas post-delimitation, is scheduled for polling on May 7 during the third phase of Lok Sabha elections. Notification for this phase will be issued on April 12, with the deadline for nominations set for April 19.
As part of the opposition INDIA bloc, the National Conference plans to contest three Lok Sabha seats in the Kashmir Valley. Meanwhile, the PDP, also part of the INDIA alliance, is expected to field candidates for two seats in Kashmir, although no official announcement has been made by the party yet.
