NEW DELHI, Mar 14: Sudha Murty, an engineer-turned-philanthropist, was sworn in as a Rajya Sabha MP on Thursday, in the presence of her husband N R Narayana Murthy.
The oath was administered by Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar in his chamber at Parliament House. Leader of the House Piyush Goyal also attended the ceremony.
Murty, aged 73, former chairperson of Infosys Foundation and author of numerous books, particularly aimed at children, was nominated to the Rajya Sabha on International Women’s Day last Friday.
Renowned for her contributions to Kannada and English literature, Murty has been honored with the Sahitya Akademi Bal Sahitya Puraskar, the Padma Shri (2006), and the Padma Bhushan (2023).
Notably, Murty, the first woman engineer to have worked with TELCO, provided the seed capital of Rs 10,000 from her emergency funds to her husband to start Infosys, which now boasts a market cap of over USD 80 billion.
Her daughter Akshata is married to British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
