India Reports 124 New COVID-19 Cases in Daily Update

New Delhi, Jan 30: India reported 124 new cases of COVID-19, with the total number of active cases standing at 1,415, according to the latest update from the Union health ministry on Tuesday.

No deaths were reported in the last 24 hours. The daily cases had dropped to double digits until December 5, after which they began to rise due to the emergence of a new variant and cold weather conditions. The highest single-day rise of 841 new cases was reported on December 31, 2023, accounting for 0.2 per cent of the peak cases reported in May 2021.

Of the total active cases, approximately 92 per cent are recovering under home isolation. Officials mentioned that the JN.1 variant is not causing an exponential rise in new cases or a surge in hospitalization and mortality.

India has experienced three waves of COVID-19, with the peak incidence during the delta wave in April-June 2021. On May 7, 2021, the highest number of cases (4,14,188) and deaths (3,915) were reported.

Since the onset of the pandemic in early 2020, over 4.5 crore people have been infected, and more than 5.3 lakh deaths have occurred in about four years across the country. The number of recovered individuals is over 4.4 crore, with a national recovery rate of 98.81 per cent.

The ministry’s website also mentioned that 220.67 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in the country.
