Current Active COVID-19 Cases in the Country Stand at 3,919

NEW DELHI, Jan 9: India has registered 475 new cases of COVID-19, and the current number of active cases stands at 3,919, according to the health ministry’s update on Tuesday. Over the past 24 hours, six deaths have been reported, with three from Karnataka, two from Chhattisgarh, and one from Assam.

The daily case count had decreased to double digits until December 5, 2023, but a surge occurred after the emergence of a new variant and worsening cold weather conditions. On December 31, 2023, 841 new cases were reported, representing 0.2 percent of the peak cases reported in May 2021.

Of the total active cases, approximately 92 percent are currently recuperating under home isolation. Authorities emphasize that the JN.1 variant is not causing an exponential rise in new cases, hospitalizations, or mortality, according to available data.

India has experienced three waves of COVID-19, with the Delta wave peaking in April-June 2021, reporting 4,14,188 new cases and 3,915 deaths on May 7, 2021. Since the onset of the pandemic in early 2020, over 4.5 crore people have been infected, and more than 5.3 lakh have died across the country.

The recovery rate stands at 98.81 percent, with over 4.4 crore people having recuperated from the disease. The country has administered 220.67 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines, as per the ministry’s website.
