Anticipated Rain and Snowfall in Higher Regions of Jammu and Kashmir Over a Two-Day Period

Srinagar, December 16: A western disturbance is poised to impact Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, bringing the potential for light rain or snow in the higher elevations over the course of two days, as per officials.

While cloud cover led to an improvement in cold wave conditions in north and central Kashmir, temperatures dropped in south Kashmir areas overnight. Srinagar city, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, registered a low of minus 1.3 degrees Celsius on Friday night, slightly higher than the previous night’s minus 3.5 degrees Celsius.

Pahalgam in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, a key base camp for the annual Amarnath Yatra, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 5.1 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the renowned ski resort of Gulmarg in Baramulla district noted a low of minus 2.8 degrees Celsius.

Other temperature readings include Qazigund at minus 3.8 degrees Celsius, Kokernag town at minus 3.6 degrees Celsius, and Kupwara at minus 1.0 degrees Celsius.

Officials have indicated that a weak western disturbance is expected to affect Jammu and Kashmir between Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. Under its influence, light rain or snowfall is anticipated in a few areas, particularly in the higher altitudes. Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Gurez Valley, and Mughal Road may experience light snowfall, according to officials.

The meteorological department forecasts an improvement in the minimum temperature due to the feeble western disturbance until Sunday. However, thereafter, the night temperature is expected to drop again by 1-3 degrees, according to the officials.
