Srinagar, December 1: The Sonamarg tourist resort in Jammu and Kashmir experienced light snowfall for the second consecutive day on Friday, following the end of a three-week dry spell in the region. While snowfall was recorded in Gulmarg in north Kashmir and other areas on Thursday, Sonamarg in central Kashmir continued to witness light snowfall on Friday morning, according to officials.
The Meteorological Department indicated a significant improvement in weather across the Union Territory. The Met Office reported partly to generally cloudy weather with light snow in Sonamarg and adjoining areas. However, it anticipated a notable improvement in weather conditions later in the afternoon, with dry weather expected to prevail.
From December 2 to 7, the weather is forecasted to be partly cloudy, and from December 8 to 10, it will be partly to generally cloudy. The officials also predicted a decrease in the minimum temperature by three to five degrees.
Despite the snowfall, the night temperature rose considerably at various places in the Valley, with Gulmarg being the only weather station where the mercury dropped below freezing on Thursday night. Srinagar, the summer capital, recorded a minimum temperature of 4.5 degrees Celsius, while Qazigund registered a low of 2.2 degrees Celsius. Pahalgam in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district recorded a low of 0.5 degrees Celsius, and the mercury in Gulmarg settled at minus 1.8 degrees Celsius.
