Srinagar police took into custody Majid Hyderi, a media professional based in Kashmir, on Friday, alleging his involvement in cases related to extortion and intimidation.
In their official statement, Srinagar police posted on X, they stated: “FIR No 88/2023 U/S 120-B, 177,386,500 of IPC registered in Sadder PS on the basis of an order issued by the Hon’ble court of JMIC Srinagar. One Majid Hyderi, son of Jahangir Hyderi and a resident of Peerbagh, has been arrested on charges of criminal conspiracy, intimidation, extortion, providing false information, defamation, among others.”
However, PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti strongly condemned Hyderi’s arrest and expressed her views on X. She remarked, “The late-night arrest of Majid Hyderi has laid bare the connections between individuals of ill repute and certain intelligence agencies. He was apprehended from his residence, resembling the capture of a wanted criminal, without adhering to due legal procedures. His mother and sister pleaded to see a warrant, but this request was also denied. This is how journalists who expose fraudulent activities find themselves accused of intimidation and defamation.”
