New Delhi, August 18th : The Congress has directed its criticism at the BJP-led government, alleging a scam involving a Chinese national, and has demanded transparency through the release of a white paper regarding the claims that he defrauded 1,200 individuals in Gujarat of Rs 1,400 crore using a betting application.
Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera asserted that while investigative bodies like the Enforcement Directorate, CBI, and the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) are deployed against opposition leaders, they seem to remain inactive against Chinese scammers who exploit Indians and then flee the country.
Khera alleged that Woo Uyanbe exploited a football betting app to scam 1,200 people in Gujarat out of a staggering Rs 1,400 crore within a span of nine days, before escaping the country. He pointed out the apparent inability of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to apprehend him.
He also accused the police in the BJP-governed Uttar Pradesh of endorsing the ‘Dani Data App,’ which subsequently gained the trust of the public before it was revealed to be a fraudulent scheme.
Khera provided visuals from social media where the Uttar Pradesh Police is seen posing with ‘Dani Data App’-sponsored ‘Love Donation’ banners.
According to Khera, the Chinese individual resided in India from 2020 to 2022 and used a fabricated football betting app to swindle millions from ordinary citizens in Gujarat, primarily from Banaskantha and Patan, as well as parts of Uttar Pradesh, before fleeing.
He asserted, “Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah are using the ED, CBI, SFIO, etc. to target Opposition leaders, but not Chinese scamsters who loot Indians and flee the country.”
“We demand that the government release a white paper to unveil the truth, to ascertain the extent of the fraud, and to identify the individuals linked to the scam,” Khera demanded.
Khera also pointed out the successive escapes of individuals like Vijay Mallya, Lalit Modi, Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi, and now the Chinese national, claiming that these instances demonstrate how the Modi government isn’t safeguarding public funds but rather enabling fraud and evasion.
He revealed that by December 2022, the Gujarat police had received 1,088 complaints and over 3,600 complaints via the helpline 1930 from individuals who had fallen victim to the scams.
Khera accused Gujarat of becoming a center for betting scams and pyramid schemes, asserting that the government’s response to these issues has been lackluster. He emphasized the need for concrete action beyond merely banning Chinese apps.
“Why couldn’t the EOW, SFIO, ED, CBI, DRI, and immigration agencies apprehend the Chinese national before his escape or put an end to his digital deception? Why did the Modi government seemingly overlook the exploitation caused by the Dani Data App, despite numerous individuals sharing their grievances on social media?” he questioned.
Khera also raised concerns about the allocation of resources from bodies like the ED, CBI, SFIO, and DRI, questioning their prioritization against political opponents. He questioned whether this was the primary agenda of Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
