Dispose criminal cases under Food Safety and Standards Act on fast track basis: HC to officers

SRINAGAR: The High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh has directed presiding officers to dispose of criminal cases filed under the Food Safety and Standard Act,2006 on a fast track basis.

In an order, the High Court has directed presiding officers to take up criminal cases filed under the law on a fast-track basis.

“The presiding officers of all such courts of UTs of J&K and Ladakh, where the Criminal Cases filed under Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 are pending, are hereby directed to take up and dispose of these cases on a fast track basis,” reads the order issued by Registrar General of the High Court.

A copy of the order has been sent to all principal district & session judges of UT of J&K and Ladakh for information and necessary action. They have been requested to get the order circulated amongst presiding officers of all the courts under their jurisdiction for information and necessary compliance at their end.

Enacted in 2006, the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSS), is the primary law for the regulation of food products in the country. It was enacted to consolidate the laws relating to food and to establish the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) for laying down science-based standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import, to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption—(KNO)
