G20 Summit Commences in Srinagar, Kashmir, with Enhanced Security Measures

Srinagar, May 22: Srinagar is all geared up to host the third G20 Tourism Working Group meeting, marking the first major international event in Jammu and Kashmir since the revocation of its special status in 2019. With extensive preparations in place and high-level security measures, the three-day G20 Summit, taking place from May 22-24, is being held under a three-tier security grid. Aerial surveillance drones, National Security Guard (NSG), and MARCOS commandos have been deployed, while the Jammu and Kashmir Police’s special operation group (SOG) will provide security cover to prevent any potential security threats.

The city of Srinagar has been adorned with decorations, showcasing a warm welcome for the delegates. The people of Kashmir are eagerly anticipating the G20 summit, as it is expected to give a significant boost to the tourism and business sectors in the region.

While there are no restrictions on public movement in Srinagar, all shops and business establishments are open to welcome the G20 summit guests. Various sectors are extending their warm greetings to the delegates, believing that this meeting will contribute to the overall development of Jammu and Kashmir and enhance its tourism sector on an international level, thereby stimulating the Union Territory’s economy.

Despite Pakistan’s criticism, India has firmly stated that G20 meetings are organized across the entire country, including Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, as they are integral parts of India. Rejecting Pakistan’s discontent, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) clarified that hosting meetings in various parts of India is a natural occurrence.

The G20 Working Group meeting in Jammu and Kashmir will focus on five key priority areas: Green Tourism, Digitalization, Skills, MSMEs (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises), and Destination Management. The objective of the meeting is to strengthen economic growth, preserve cultural heritage, and promote sustainable development in the region.

The event will witness the participation of G20 member countries, invited countries, international organizations, and industry stakeholders.
