UN estimates India’s population will exceed China’s in the middle of the year

NEW DELHI: According to new estimates from the United Nations, India’s population is set to surpass China’s in the middle of this year, making it the most populous country in the world. The UN predicts that India’s population will reach approximately 1.39 billion by mid-year, while China’s population is expected to be around 1.34 billion. These figures reflect a long-term trend, as India’s population has been growing at a faster rate than China’s in recent years. However, the Covid-19 pandemic may have affected population growth in both countries, and it remains to be seen how this will impact the long-term population trends.
