In a statement Aam Aadmi Party leader & social activist Gurmeet Singh Baaghi said that Imposition of Property Tax on the people of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is unfortunate the Government should review and immediately revoke the notification. After imposing several taxes, now government has given another gift to people of J&K by imposing Property Tax.
The people are already reeling under the financial crunches due to slowdown of economy and this unnecessary and extra property tax will add more burdens on them. The People of Union Territory of J&K don’t have money to arrange their basic needs and even they can’t pay children’s school fees, how will they pay property tax. The imposition of property tax seems to be an unreasonable decision by the Government. It is pertinent to mention here that the Jammu and Kashmir administration on Tuesday issued a notification for imposition of property tax in the Union Territory, which will come into effect from the next financial year with tax rates being five per cent of Taxable Annual Value (TAV) for residential properties and six per cent for commercial properties. However, residential houses up to a built-up area of 1000 square feet have been exempted from the purview of Property Tax while smaller assets have been taxed at very lower rates.
Baaghi said that why inabsence of a democratically elected government such decisions have been taken. The people of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir are the worst sufferers due to absence of elected government. Instead of these decisions Govt should take steps to tackle unemployment, inflation, corruption, etc. People from all walks of society are unhappy with the performance of the Government. On one hand the public is suffering from inflation and unemployment, and on the other hand the government is busy in imposing taxes and taxes. The decision to impose property tax on residential and commercial buildings in Jammu and Kashmir is being imposed on the people. Baaghi urged the government to review the property tax and immediately revoke the notification.
