The decision by the Telangana government to accord state honours to the funeral of revolutionary balladeer Gaddar has sparked a contentious debate, drawing intense scrutiny from the Anti-Terrorism Forum (ATF). The forum raises objections, asserting that such a move could potentially diminish the sacrifices made by police personnel and civilians who valiantly fought against the shadow of Naxalism (Maoism).
Ravinuthala Shashidhar, the Secretary of ATF, asserted that Gaddar’s evocative revolutionary songs had the potential to draw impressionable youth into the fold of the Maoist movement. He expressed worry that Gaddar’s influential poetry might have played a role in radicalizing young minds, leading them to take up arms against the democratic fabric of the nation. The consequence of such actions, Shashidhar emphasized, was the tragic loss of countless lives, including both law enforcement officers and innocent citizens.
In a strongly-worded statement, Shashidhar condemned the Telangana government’s decision to extend state honours to Gaddar’s last rites. He argued that such an act would not only diminish the sacrifices of police martyrs who had laid down their lives to uphold democracy and maintain law and order but also potentially dent the morale of the police force.
Shashidhar further posited that this decision might compound the grief of the families of police martyrs. He suggested that the Police Officers’ Association should voice its concerns and exert pressure on the government to reconsider this controversial move.
The ATF leader emphasized that interpreting state honours as a form of homage to Gaddar could inadvertently be seen as an endorsement of the Maoist ideology, a viewpoint that the forum staunchly opposes.
